What ingredients should you be looking for in your skin care?

If there is one skin care goal, we nearly all have in common it’s to slow down the signs of skin ageing. We all are going to grow old and our skin will grow old with us, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing,  we can all have skin that ages in a healthy way and I for one would rather have that than going down the medical route!
So what can we do??
There are specific ingredients that you will want to incorporate in your skin care products and the following will tell you what to look for, why, and which products we have from Dermalogica containing these amazing ingredients! –

1, SPF
This is an absolute essential yet despite all the knowledge we have many of us still do not use it daily. Skin cancer is not the only possible consequence of not using an SPF, it wreaks havoc on our skin too and should be your number 1 step in an anti-ageing routine. UV exposure can lead to dark spots and a breakout in collagen which leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Regardless of the season you should be using sunscreen every day, 80% of UV rays still penetrates the clouds, impacting on your skin.

Antioxidants help neutralize the damage done by free radicals( uneven skin tone, inflammation and signs of premature skin ageing) , these are molecules that are everywhere: in the air, our bodies and materials around us. Pollution, sunlight and smoking also trigger the production of new free radicals. Using products with antioxidants help to prevent further damage like brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles.
You will find Antioxidants in just about all Dermalogica products!

When it comes to reversing the signs of skin ageing, Retinol is hands down the industry’s favourite ingredient!
It has the power to help accelerate skin renewal and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots for firmer, smoother and more evenly toned skin.

Retinoids are a Vitamin A derivative . Retinol (the strongest form of retinoid available without prescription) is converted by skin enzymes into the even stronger form of Retinoic Acid, which is what causes irritation. Fortunately, the skin can build retinoid receptors with controlled exposure to Retinol to help soothe and control irritation in the meantime.
Dermalogica use advanced microencapsulation technology to help stabilise Retinol and ensure its maximum potency. This approach protects the Retinol from degrading as soon as its exposed, enabling it to deliver superior results. Microencapsulated Retinol also creates an invisible shield on the skin’s surface to help reduce moisture loss, which is critical for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. You can find this technology in Age Reversal Eye Complex and both Overnight Retinol Repair products.

Dermalogica’s Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5% and Overnight Retinol Repair 1% come with a unique Buffer Cream that allows you to customize the strength of the Retinol in each formula while your skin acclimates. You must use 0.5% first before going on to 1%.
The increase in cellular turnover to exfoliate clogged pores found in Retinol also makes it an amazing treatment for acne. It’s important that Retinol is used correctly and there are many cheap products on the market claiming to be a miracle cure, most of these you will find to be a derivative and not Retinol which is a more natural and better alternative.

If you find your skin is losing its firmness then you need Peptides!  Peptides are a small chain of amino acids that help build collagen, elastin and keratin which lead to firmer and smoother skin. As applying collagen topically has no effect on the skin other than hydration finding ingredients that promote the production of collagen naturally is a great way to plump and lift the skin.

5, AHA’s
AHA’s are exfoliants that chemically break down and slough off dead skin cells, dirt, debris and excess oil from the skin. Whilst exfoliating the skin they also help to promote the growth of new cells allowing for better absorption and penetration of products, restoring hydration and brightening the overall complexion.

Hyaluronic acid is like gold when it comes to hydration, it holds up to a thousand times its weight in water and locks it in. It gives dehydrated skins a burst of moisture and gradually releases it through the day, helping to plump the skin and fill fine lines. As with collagen the amount of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we age so applying a topical product helps the skin look hydrated and plump and maintain its elasticity. Because its water based and non-comedogenic, Hyaluronic Acid makes an excellent moisturiser and for sensitive breakout prone skins too.
